[USA] Jefferson Fellowships for Journalist by East West Center Programme

Jefferson Fellowships for Journalist

The Jefferson Fellowships program was launched in 1967 to enhance public understanding through the news media of cultures, issues and trends in the Asia Pacific region, broadly defined as Asia, the Pacific Islands and the United States. The Fellowships provide U.S. and Asia Pacific journalists with an opportunity to broaden their understanding of Asia Pacific issues and build a professional network through one week of dialogue with professional colleagues and experts at the East-West Center, followed by a two-week study tour to cities in Asia or the U.S.

Spring 2010 Jefferson Fellowships Program
NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THE SPRING 2010 PROGRAM

Program Dates: April 17 - May 9, 2010
Study Tour Destinations: Honolulu, Hawaii; Hong Kong SAR; Shanghai, China; Jakarta, Indonesia
Theme: Reporting New Realities: Beyond the Economic Crisis

The shock of the global financial crisis and renewed commitment to addressing climate change pose new realities for countries around the world. Leaders at the APEC Summit in Singapore in November 2009 stated `We cannot go back to `growth as usual` or `trade as usual.` The post-crisis landscape will be different. We need a new growth paradigm. We need a fresh model of economic integration.` But what will such models look like, and how are countries positioned to implement them?

Participants in the Spring 2010 Jefferson Fellowships will explore new realities in the U.S.- Asia Pacific region in the wake of the shock of the global economic crisis and in the face of the growing challenge of climate change. This special Jefferson Fellowshipsprogram will begin with one week of dialogue sessions at the East-West Center in Honolulu, followed by an opportunity to attend the East-West Center`s 2nd International Media Conference in Hong Kong on the theme `Reporting New Realities in theAsia Pacific Region.` The conference will provide on-the-ground updates on news and media issues throughout the world`s most dynamic region through keynote speakers, panels of journalists and other professionals, plenary sessions with regional experts, and media workshops.

Participants will then travel to Shanghai and Jakarta to explore some of these new realities. China and Indonesia are countries with huge populations and rising influence in theAsia Pacific region. As members of the G-20, they both have a seat at the new international table to discuss the future of global governance. Yet both are still developing countries that are seeking a model of sustainable economic growth in the face of new global economic realities, regional power balances and climate change. Participants will visit Shanghai in advance of the opening of the World Expo on the theme `Better City, Better Life` to explore the significance of the Expo for China and for Shanghai, the new Chinese-U.S. relationship, and how China is moving forward with its economic recovery and future development. In Jakarta, participants will explore the under-reported `new reality` of democratic and economic transition in the world`s fourth most populous country and the largest Muslim democracy. They will examine the many challenges that lie ahead for the multi-ethnic, multi-lingual country to develop a robust, effective democracy and economic growth in a challenging new global landscape.

Who Can Apply:
Working print, broadcast, and online journalists in the United States, the Pacific Islands, and Asia with a minimum of five years of professional experience. Applicants must have the ability to communicate in English in a professional, multi-cultural environment.

Application Deadline:
Wednesday, January 27, 2010

Funding:
The Jefferson Fellowships are supported from a grant from The Freeman Foundation. The grant funds economy class, roundtrip airfare to and from Honolulu, Hawaii as well asprogram -related air and ground transportation, lodging, and meals for participating journalists. A modest per diem is also provided. Participants are responsible for all applicable visa fees and any additional visa-related expenses.

News organizations are also asked to support their employees` participation by cost-sharing whenever possible. An `Employers Statement of Support` is a required part of the application. While financial assistance from the employer is not required, employers are encouraged to provide support to their Jefferson Fellows as a demonstration of their commitment to theprogram.

For more information about the program and how to apply, please see the Spring 2010 Jefferson Fellowships announcement.

HOW TO APPLY
Applicants must submit the Jefferson Fellowships application form and

[Denmark] PhD Scholarship in Management at Aarhus School of Business, Aarhus University

PhD Scholarship in Management at Aarhus School of Business, Aarhus University

The Department of Management at Aarhus School of Business, Aarhus University, has an opening for a PhD scholarship as of 1 March 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Over the past few years, entrepreneurship has become an area of increased strategic interest and the entrepreneurship research group at The Department of Management therefore invites applicants for a position as PhD student. This particular position is within the area of entrepreneurship and regional development and is funded by the Regional Development Council.

The PhD student will be joining a dedicated and vibrant group of senior and junior researchers in entrepreneurship from both the business school and the university. S/he will be expected to partake in events arranged by the group and in writing of academic articles alone and with members of the group, and to communicate research results to the public. A successful international applicant is expected to acquire a basic working knowledge of Danish during the early period of the PhD position.

The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate a strong interest and some prior knowledge in entrepreneurship theory. We value methodological plurality. Earlier experience with working in an academic environment from a position as research assistant will be preferable.

PhD students in Denmark work under very favourable terms: They are employed on a full-time basis for three years, and the salary is sufficient to cover all necessary accommodation and living costs and to lead an active life. A PhD student does not pay university fees.

PhD students at Aarhus School of Business (ASB), work under almost the same terms as other research staff, i.e. they have their own office space with a computer, incl. Internet access, email, phone etc., as well as access to secretarial assistance etc. Moreover, expenses in connection with the scientific work are covered, e.g. participation in research courses and academic conferences in Denmark and abroad.

There are also good and well-paid job opportunities in Denmark for people with a PhD degree, both within and outside the university sector.

A PhD student in Denmark must complete an individually planned PhD course programme within the relevant research area and conduct a research project under the supervision of experienced senior researchers. The PhD student is also expected, as part of the programme, to spend some time (up to six months), with coverage of travel and accommodation expenses, at another – often foreign – research institution. During the programme, the PhD student is further expected to gain teaching experience within the subject area as well as experience with other forms of dissemination of research results. ASB also finances participation in relevant PhD courses and scientific conferences. In addition, it is expected that PhD students participate in and contribute to the other activities of the department.

Conditions of employment
The PhD fellowship has duration of three years. Graduates and students expecting to complete their study programme in the near future may apply for the fellowship. The employment is covered by a national collective agreement.

The applicant`s research potential will be the determining factor for a positive academic assessment. Exam results will also be assessed. For further information on admission criteria and ASB’s PhD programme, please look here.

Application
You can apply via the Aarhus University web-based facility (FUA). https://mit.au.dk/

Please mark the application with scholarship no.: 544-0141

The following material must be attached:
1. Project description (max. 5 pages), including the expected theoretical and methodological approach.
2. Graduate diploma (including a list of all grades).
3. CV.
4. Other material, if any (e.g. publications), which should be taken into account in the assessment.

Questions about the preparation of the project description may be directed to Associate Professor Helle Neergaard, Aarhus School of Business, tel. +45 8948 6607, e-mail: hen@asb.dk.

Deadline for application
Monday 1 February 2010 at 12:00 noon. The applications will subsequently be assessed by an expert assessment committee, and applicants will receive the committee’s assessment of the individual application and the response to the application from ASB approx. one month after the expiry of the deadline for application.

The assessment of the application comprises an overall assessment of the applicant and his or her qualifications. [Europe] Erasmus Mundus Master Program in Embedded Computing Systems

Erasmus Mundus Master Program in Embedded Computing Systems

Programme Summary
The European Master`s Course in Embedded Computing Systems (EMECS) is designed to educate Bachelor graduates from Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science as well as graduates from related disciplines to become experts in the field of Embedded Computing Systems. The participating institutions are:

University of Kaiserslautern (TUKL), Germany
Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering

Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, Norway
Faculty of Information Technology Mathematics and Electrical Engineering

University of Southampton (UoS), United Kingdom
School of Electronics and Computer Science

EMECS is a two-years Master`s Course (120 ECTS credits) that can be pursued at any two of the three participating institutions. Students will earn 50% of the credits at each institution leading to a joint degree from the respective institutions. The language of instruction is English.Students participating in this programme will be trained in three major areas:

Hardware Architectures of Embedded Systems
System-on-Chip Design
System Software

These areas constitute the `Core Programme` of EMECS and will be taught during the first year of study at each institution. Completion of the core programme (45 ECTS credits) will ensure the mobility of thestudents after the first year of study.

About Embedded Systems
An `embedded computing system`, or simply `embedded system`, is a complex computer system which is specialized for certain applications in a particular technical environment. At the core of such a system there are one or several microprocessors programmed to perform application-specific tasks. Parts of the system are usually realized as a System-on-Chip (SoC). The computing components of an embedded system, typically, do not rely on classical user interfaces like keyboards and monitors. Instead, they communicate with the system environment through interfaces which are invisible to the human user. Embedded systems take over increasingly complex computing tasks in applications ranging from aerospace, automotive and robotic systems to consumer electronics, process control, manufacturing and telecommunication. Smart houses need massive support from embedded systems for sensing and actuation. Embedded systems are also vital in medical technology and biomedical systems like pacemakers, motion control, ultrasound diagnostics, and cardiographic equipment. In addition, they are indispensible in monitoring and control of environmental systems. An emerging technology is called `bio-inspired hardware`, a field taking inspiration from nature to rethink the way computational machines are built and how they operate.

While general-purpose computing systems such as desktop PCs are designed for a wide spectrum of applications, embedded computing systems are individually optimized to fulfill a small number of specialized tasks. Consequently, there is a wealth of embedded system architectures and design styles which are driven by particular requirements in specific application domains. While the market on desktop computing is dominated by a few major companies, “embedded systems” is still an open field with large growth rates. More than 90 % of all processors being sold today are not used in general purpose desktop computing (personal computers) but are designed specifically for special-purpose embedded applications.

An increasing number of highly skilled embedded systems engineers will be needed to lead this development in Europe and world-wide. This is also emphasized in the study titled `Zukunft Digitale Wirtschaft (Future Digital Economy)` by Roland Berger Strategy Consultants which was ordered by the German chancellor for the first German IT Summit in 2007. The Roland Berger study identifies Embedded Systems as one of six `hidden champions` with particular importance to the national and European economy.
